Jesus Cured My TMJ Pain (Using Feldenkrais and Somatic Visualization)

TMJ Muscles and JointsGetting ready to move to Isla Mujeres, Mexico (in less than 10 days!) and decided to take some time to create and release a new product: “Eliminate TMJ Pain Now.

I tend to create products that arise from my own needs and this one is no exception. I had TMJ symptoms on and off for many years. I’m sure it was completely physical, due to poor self-use, and had nothing to do with constantly being angry and vengeful and having the desire to set fires and blow things up. That’s what I tell myself. Though I’m sorry to say that I STILL find myself clenching my jaw and tongue at times, it usually only happens when I read the FeldyForum or when someone sneaks up behind me and says, “FGNA” or “Service Marks.” But I am working on it. One day at a time.

FGNA jaw clenching aside, I never have TMJ pain anymore and the processes embedded with my Eliminate TMJ Pain series have helped tremendously. In fact, the processes used meet the requirements of both the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research who are adamant that conservative and reversible treatments for TMJ should precede surgery or other invasive techniques. For those of you interested in buying the series, type in the discount code “blog” for a 30% discount on it or any other product that I sell. All of my Feldenkrais products, including the Eliminate TMJ series, can be found on my Feldenkrais mp3 store.

***Please note the “practitioner version” that I created which has transcripts of the sessions. You can use them as a starting point to create your own workshops and products. If you do, don’t bother to credit me. Just tell people that the sessions came to you in a dream. Preferably a dream that mentions a burning bush and some stone tablets. People love that kind of stuff and you will likely sell a great deal. In fact, may I be so bold as to name your new product? Try one of these:

“God’s Pain-Free Purpose for Your Mouth”
“Holy Rollers: Tongue and Jaw Circles For A More Spiritual You”

Don’t forget to trademark your terms and sue the shit out of anyone who tries to use them.

Be well – Ryan

Feldenkrais: Everything You ‘Know’ About Healing May Be Dead Wrong

Great Feldenkrais Article by Michael Sigman of The Huffington Post:

“…when Feldenkrais practitioner/physical therapist Stacy Barrows encouraged me to attend her class — which, I imagined, would be all about the stretch — I was wary. Our individual sessions were going well, but classes tend to induce peer pressure, and I worried about vigorous pulling on a still-tender area.

The class blew my mind. Virtually all we did was open and close our left hands as slowly as humanly possible. Okay, there was one other thing: imagining we were doing the same with our right hands.”

Moshe Feldenkrais at Rotterdam (1977)

I recently purchased an mp3 CD that contains over 13 hours of lectures and Awareness Through Movement by Moshe Feldenkrais. The material was taught in Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1976. True to the understated (one could say boring) marketing style of the International Feldenkrais Federation, the lessons are described thus:

Volume 1: Moshe Feldenkrais in Rotterdam 1976 (MP3 audio files). In this workshop Dr. Feldenkrais teaches seven classic lessons that range from simple to challenging.” (snooze).

Seven classic lessons my ass! The mp3′s are vintage Moshe. From the very first moment he dives right in as only he can do – speaking to experiential learning, health, awareness, the relationship between structure and function – the primacy of movement for functions of life. Hmmm!! If you are interested in Moshe’s work, grab this product and geek out. You will be glad that you did. After listening to the first two hours, I have been experiencing myself and the work much more deeply.

Luckily, I found about the CD’s and bought them based on the basis of recommendations of several people in the community, not from the IFF’s description above. Who recommended the sessions to me? I can’t tell you lest I be accused of something. Normally I don’t mind. But today, I am not in the mood. Let’s just say that it was Che Guevara. On a motorcycle trip around the world, he became aware of the suffering of Feldenkrais practitioners. He is one his way to Portland to start a revolution. He is armed.

Unfortunately, the sound quality on the CD is not that great, there is a bit of echo here and there and some “tinny” sounds. And for a guy like me with tinnitus, it can be damn annoying at times. I already have enough ringing in my ears from the meth-induced abuse to myself that I did in the 80′s. But even so, I can tell you that after the first two sessions I am completely hooked. Come to think of it I got hooked on meth just as easily.

By the way: According to the IFF the products on the website are only “for the exclusive use of persons who have graduated from, or are currently enrolled in, a professional Feldenkrais training program.” Yea, whatever. Just between you and I, the IFF has no way of verifying if you are or are not in a training or have graduated from one. So do yourself a favor – if you want them just order them.

And don’t worry – Moshe wants you to have these sessions. He told me. I swear. In fact, in a dream last night Moshe told me, “Ryan, thou art my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” I was a bit scared when he told me that. Sensing my fear, he gently rolled my head. I breathed deeply. The master had touched me! And I will never forget what Moshe told me next. It was so weird. He said,

You will go to the Dagobah system. There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me.

My eyes opened wide. I wanted to speak, but he waved me off impatiently and said:

Oi! Don’t be idiotic!! Listen to the Rotterdam mp3′s first.

Moshe Feldenkrais at Rotterdam

Update: April, 2013. I do not think you can buy the Rotterdam sessions unless you are a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Give me some time and I will see if I can figure out a way for you to steal them or obtain them illegally.

FGNA Board News?

I would like to applaud the FGNA board’s attempt to harness social media in order to connect with FGNA members. It is a welcome step. It is nice to be able to see a video and connect names and faces. That being said, the video below has no content. That the board met? We know. That they want to communicate more and better? We hear. But the video below communicates nothing of substance.

A valiant first attempt. Next time, please add some substance?

Last night I received my once-a-week google alert for the term “Feldenkrais.” Google sends me an email with every mention of the the word “Feldenkrais” that it picks up around the web. The list includes blogs, websites, forums, and all points in between.

I took the list, inserted links, cut out the spam and pasted it below. I thought you might like to take a look at what your colleagues, friends and the general public are saying about the method.

Bone Mineral Content And Fractures: Are They Related?

The Job of Congolese Women and Girls Is To Car...
Image by Woody Collins via Flickr

In a previous post on the relationship between structural “deviations” and pain symptoms we discussed how specific issues such as “disk protrusions” and “torn rotator cuffs” are not necessarily related to pain symptoms – regardless of what well-meaning health practitioners may tell us.

Now, let’s talk about a related idea we first touched upon in our podcast with Ruthy Alon. Namely, is low bone mineral content the cause of bone fractures?

Bone Density and Bone Fractures

It is well established that most women lose bone density as they get older (Citation: Hip and calcaneal bone loss increase with advancing age.) But what is puzzling is the fact that bone fractures – presumably related to bone density and bone mineral content – varies among populations. For example, African American women have much lower rates of bone fractures than do Caucasian women.

Why? Is it because African American women have stronger bones? Do they have slower mineral loss? For the U.S. population, I have not seen an answer. However, I was intrigued by this comment by Ruthy Alon on a Facebook post (African Women Walking):

“Comparative research shows that African women, who carry massive loads on their heads
with effortless grace, are one hundred times less liable to fractures than women in the West,
despite the fact that their bone density is lower than that of Western women.”

Could this be true? Do African women, with dramatically fewer bone fractures than Caucasian women have actually have lower bone density? If so, what accounts for the differences in fracture rates?

Bone Density Research

According to a study in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Ruthy is correct. The study compared Caucasian women and African women on a variety of factors including bone density, age, and weight. Surprisingly, not only did the African women maintain bone density at a similar rate to Caucasian women, but they actually had LESS overall bone mineral content than did the Caucasian women. Got that? Lower bone density and fewer fractures.

According to the researchers,”These results challenge the concept of BMC [Bone Mineral Content] as a primary determinant of fracture risk.”

If bone density is not the “cause” of fractures, then what is? How do African women avoid fractures? What can Caucasian women learn from them? Would anyone like to share a theory? If you are a Feldenkrais Practitioner or Bones For Life Practitioner, you likely have an opinion on this. Yes?

I’m listening.

Open-Source Materials Based On The Work Of Moshe Feldenkrais

Do you think the work of Moshe Feldenkrais should be more widely available?

If you read the FeldyForum or participate in other community activities such as attending guild conferences, you may have heard about the dissatisfaction that many Feldenkrais and Feldenkrais-based practitioners have about the accessibility of materials. The discussions have been going on for many, many years.

Much of the materials related to the work of Moshe Feldenkrais are, in fact, copyrighted. That is, the written transcript or audio of the particular “ATM” or other session is protected under copyright law and a person cannot wantonly make copies, re-sell, re-transmit or otherwise utilize the materials without written consent of the creator.

That is, perhaps, sensible. People do expect to have certain protections on the use of their creative work and do expect to profit from their own materials.

The Limitations of Copyright

However, when considering general access to materials related to the work of Moshe Feldenkrais there are deep and problematic issues with copyright that no one in the community has fully addressed.

Some of the limitations of copyrighted Feldenkrais-based materials:

1) Restrict the growth of the method by restricting access to materials.
2) Restrict the development of practitioners by forcing them to buy and adapt source materials.
3) Encourage pathological interactions where friends and colleagues seem forced to “break the law” in order to share, grow and learn together.
4) Slow the process of creating new applications and products based on the work.
5) Limit the public’s ability to learn about the method and utilize it (this is a huge problem).
6) Dramatically reduce the potential of the work to “go viral” and spread on the internet via email, social networking websites, blogs, podcasts and the dozens of new tools that have not been invented yet.
7) Hide the crucial “elusive obvious” that there a many business, revenue and marketing models that do not rely on copyright. Models that may be more beneficial to the continued growth of our communities and by extension – individuals within our communities.

There are other issues such as violations of evolutionary and learning principles. But I will save those arguments for a later post.

For now, let me ask you a question:

What would happen if there were a core of Feldenkrais-based lessons that were freely available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year – forever?

I’m talking about lessons that anyone could download, use, adapt, share, give away, post on Facebook, email, give to their neighbors, their students, their lovers, their mothers, in any way they choose, for their own benefit and for the benefit of their community? Do you think that might help to create an explosion of interest in the work of Moshe Feldenkrais?

Would greater access Feldenkrais-based materials make the world a better place…?

Would greater access Feldenkrais-based materials help more people understand and use the work….?

Would some people who downloaded and used free Feldenkrais-based materials be more likely to end up in your classes…and on your table…?

Would you like to have freely available material that you could use in your study groups, classes and in your own products?

Would you be excited if you released one of your own works under an open-source license and found that it was being used by people all over the world, thereby introducing you and your ideas to a huge audience?

If any of your answers to those questions resonate with you, then it’s time to for you to get to work and start enacting your intention. Nothing is stopping you from making your own transcripts, putting lessons in your own words, and releasing them under a less restrictive copyright such as a creative commons share-and-share alike or even a public domain license. And when you have done so , let me know, so that I can help others find your work. Who knows, we may be able to build an entire database together.

And in case you haven’t noticed:

“I’ve Already Made My Decision”

Over the coming days and weeks, I am going to begin releasing many of my own transcripts and perhaps other materials under a Creative-Commons “Share and Share Alike” license. I will also be discussing some of the benefits and limitations of doing so.

Until then, stay tuned. I hope you will enjoy and use the materials that I share with you.
